Bodybuilders and Counterfiet Muscles

From a fitness nwesletter- I couldn't agree more!



But they are NOT designed with the primary intention
of making you look like you're fit, healthy and vibrantly
alive - when you're really not.

There you have it, my friend. The above paragraph gives
you the way most bodybuilders think - and the way they
want YOU to think.

They want you to be obsessed with every morsel of body
fat. They want you to count the number of veins you can
see when you flex. They want you to to have symmetry
and a host of other artsy-fartsy terms.

And they could care less about how strong you are, how
athletic you are, how healthy you are, how flexibile - nor
how intelligent.

Shave body. Apply lotion. Stand before mirror - primp and
preen.

Get into tanning bed.

Workout with weights that would embarrass a five-year old.

And when you train - remember, pump is more important than
function.

Build your muscles as big as you can - but never ask yourself
questions like: How strong am I, really. How much endurance do
I have. How flexible am I. And most importantly - what can I do
with this body I'm creating - other than pose and flex.

I am not embellishing the truth in the least when I tell you that there
are champion bodybuilders who cannot walk up a flight of stairs without
being out of gas.

One of my favorite eye-witness accounts was when I spoke to a
bodybuilder in a gym. He was pedaling an exercycle. It was a
computerized device made by a top company. Yet, the amazing
fact was the bodybuilder was pedaling without it being turned on.

I asked him what he was doing. I thought the machine might be
broken. But it wasn't. This was the man's "cardio workout."

"I burn more fat when I train this way," he said.

"Yeah, I'm SURRRRRRE you do," I replied. "You just better hope
that you never have to be fit enough to save your own life someday."

And therein lies another truism exposing the fallacy of bodybuilding.
These guys are not fit enough to save their own lives. They're not
fit enough to even fight. Yet they'll take enough roids that they can
growl and groan and scream as if they're tiger-claw tough.

Believe me, they aren't.

Most bodybuilders are massively insecure; have weak self-images -
and all you need do to make one upset is say, "My goodness, your
arms are looking a bit smaller. Are you okay."

Men who get fit the functional fitness way love to compete against
bodybuilders in a functional way - especially in a combat sport or
martial art. When we do, we quickly discover what we already know:
All those big muscles, rips, cuts, nips, tucks and striations - they
don't
amount to a hill of ... well, anything.

Despite the size, the striations and the low, low, low bodyfat - the
truth is
that bodybuilder muscles are "counterfeit." They're the antithesis of
functional strength - of core strength.

All of the above represents reason after reason why you'll love functional fitnes. You get fit in a natural way. You acquire strength,
endurance
and flexibility that you can USE.

You don't need to shave your chest. You don't need a tanning bed or a
set of posing trunks.

Much of the time, you don't even need a mirror - even though from time
to
time the mirror can and should be used as a training guide and
measuring
stick - just not in the obsessive/compulsive way that bodybuilders use
it.

Most importantly, with Functional Fitness, you build the internal and
external strength and health that can save your own life. And along
with
this comes confidence and courage.

So reach out and grab the authentic, the real, the genuine training
that
truly DOES improve your life. And leave the counterfeit muscles to
those
whose bodies gradually become so racked with pain that they can barely
move at all.

Weight Loss Surgery Woes

Weight-Loss Surgery Woes

Weight-loss surgery may seem like a good way to help morbidly obese people who are unable to lose weight through conventional means to stay out of the hospital in the long run. But that assumption may not be true, it turns out. A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that California adults who underwent the Roux en Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, the most common type of weight-loss surgery, had twice the rate of hospitalization in the year following surgery than they had in the year before surgery. What's more, RYGB patients who were followed for three years spent roughly $20,000 on post-surgical hospitalizations in addition to the surgery's $33,000 tab. That's sobering news -- for both patients and insurers.

RECENT STATISTICS

Last year, US doctors performed more than 100,000 weight-loss procedures. More than 80% of these were gastric bypass surgeries, which promote weight loss by restricting food intake and reducing the amounts of calories and nutrients the body absorbs. After RYGB surgery, patients can lose roughly 60% to 70% of their excess weight and enjoy improvements in chronic conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obstructive sleep apnea.

On the downside, patients may experience nutritional deficiencies and digestive problems, and, as the California study found, about 20% of patients go back into the hospital for surgery-related complications, such as ventral hernia repair or gastric revision. For more on gastric bypass considerations.

To qualify for gastric bypass surgery, a person must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more (about 100 pounds overweight for men and 80 pounds overweight for women) or a BMI between 35 and 39.9 and a serious obesity-related health problem, such as diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea. Deciding whether the surgery's risks outweigh the potential health benefits gets a little more complicated when recognizing the potential for additional health problems and hospitalizations, not to mention the extra costs.

The Savage Files Jungleman Running Method -follow up

Just finished checking my cell phone for messages.

Now Jack Savage is not like a lot of people - as new technologies emerge ( such as cell phones) that are supposed to make ones life better but instead makes one more of a SLAVE than ever- I make golldarn sure the new technologies work for ME rather than the other way around!

You see it all the time- cell phone rings and no matter where they are - it has GOT to be answered NOW NOW NOW!

Many people can't watch a movie, can't eat a relaxing meal, can't even go to the bathroom because they are SLAVES to modern "conveinientces".

THAT AIN'T RIGHT!

And Jack Savage REFUSES to live his life that way!

Jack Savage ABSOLUTELY refuses to be a slave to modern technology :

- I check my cell phone several times per day to see it there are calls I need to make

-I check my e mail once every day or two, then answer e mails for a specified amount of time, and THAT'S IT for the day!! I'll get to the rest of them in order eventually.

-If I'm into something I don't even answer the home phone but rather let the answering machine pick it up.

In short , I've determined to let modern technology make my life better and more fullfilled- not more hectic and stressfull.

I USE emerging technologies, I don't let them use me!!

To the subject at hand:

A voice message from Dan Steel ( a super operator from my unit ) :

" Jack you're a GENIUS!! I tried that new running style you showed me and it works! I felt like I was flying and wasn't tired in the least!! This is great - you've extended my career another 10 years AT LEAST!!"

More information - who is Dan Steel and WHY would he turn to me to seek information and try such a unconvetional running style??

Dan Steel is a former FORCE Recon Marine now a long time operator in my unit.

Time has taken its toll- he is now in his 40s and over weight to boot.

Ya can't do anything about the age thing, but the overweight problem can directly be attributed to lack of quality roadwork.

Despite the fact that he had to run all the time in Force Recon he always HATED it! He did it because he had too.

Nothing much has changed thru the years: now he only runs whenever he absolutle has too. This can cause problems when you consider that he is tested on a TIMED mile frequently. Usually he barely passes the test; and how he does that is a mystery to many considering his lack of aerobics has caused him to become rather rotund.

The handwriting was on the wall : Dan Steel's time in the unit was VERY short!!

I took about 10 min one day explaining to him the JungleMan Natural Running technique and he decied to give it a try.

He took to it like a duck to water- running is now FUN!! This is how people are SUPPOSED to run!! He feels GREAT whenever he runs!

Now he WANTS to run all the time!!

Sooner or later Dan Steel will hang up his gun belt and quit the unit- but it will be on HIS terms!!

NOT because he could not make the run times!!

Build a Super Stong Neck- The Neck of Spring Steel Program

Jack, I would appreciate your opinion on the value
of two exercises, the wrestlers neck bridge and the
Hindu squat. Are these exercises really that good
for you? Are regular pushups just as good? Can't you
develop the neck with isometric exercises and self
resistance exercises? I would appreciate your

Hi Robert!

Hundu Squat: A very good exercise for the legs but more for building wind and endurance.

I've included it in my DynaCalisthenics course.

Neck and Wrestler's Bridge:

Self Resistance and Isometrics ( as commonly taught ) are great for the neck and will build the neck to the satisfaction of the great majority of people.

BTW : Most neck bridging variations are primarily a form of isometrics.

Many people don't want a neck they think is "too big"-so the wrestler's bridge is something they may want to stay away from

However, for wrestlers, football players, jui jitsu,and mixed martial artist- some version of the neck Bridge is the way to go.

Tips and tricks for building a Neck of Steel:

-start with self resistance and isometics for several weeks to buld a conditioning base

-add wrestler's bridge GRADUALLY: 2-3 times a week.

-overdoing the bridge will injure your neck

-there are many versions of the bridge-the Hundu version is very good and very popular

-i recomend doing the Bonomo Bridge for at least a month before going on the the Hindu Bridge. This version is so good it may actually be superior to the Hindu version- but do both for complete development:

Bonomo Bridge:

On back -bridge up on bottom of feet and TOP of head -hands go to the floor with arms relatively straight- flex entire body as you press hands into floor: the idea being to get a total body isometric contraction- hold for desired number of seconds WHILE BREATHING

Do 2- 3 times per week with at least a rest day in between. Finish off with Dynaflex and Self Resistance exercises to round out development and for stretching and flexibility benefits.

Start with just ONE rep, adding a rep every other workout until you reach 6-10 reps.

For each rep the flexing is held for the number of seconds equel to the number of the rep.

Example:

Rep 1 hold for 1 second

Rep 2 hold for 2 seconds

Rep 7 hold for 7 seconds

etc
